I’ve read alot online, and alot here. I know newspapers go for headlines rather than truth and it’s disgusting. ADOC appears to be just looking to make it go away, to be covering their asses. It’s so wrong! Michael needed help. They didn’t provide it in any way. Where are the protocols?

I just saw this for the first time. I know he had asked for help. But to see this makes me want to fall to my knees..for years he begged for help.
I know this may not impact all of you… Most of you are disconnected from this and it doesn’t make a difference. It’s hard to really care unless it impacts you directly right? Like maybe if this were your family member. What would you do? Or maybe if this happened to YOU. What would you want others to do?
Everyone says they want to make a difference in some way. But when given the opportunity, you turn your head. Here is chance to impact in a huge way. It may not seem like much but if you read the documentation and leave a genuine comment of your thoughts, you’ll be making a big difference without much effort at all. It’s legal documentation- proof that DOC needs change. Go to the advocate page and sign up. Think of this as your loved one. Think of this as you.
Sometimes when I’m out driving, I’ll take a longer way home to be able to drive by 67th avenue and Peoria. The circle k this all happened at. I’ve stared at the gas pumps and I have walked into the gas station and stared at the polar pop section, reimagining all that happened right where I stand..
I’ve visited Elijah’s memorial site and fixed up anything that had fallen over. I have prayed. For everyone involved.
It is not only my brother that needs justice. And some of you may underestimate the amount of disgust I have for the events that took place that night. I don’t think it’s okay. And I don’t think it’s excusable. But I think a lot of you underestimate the power that a schizophrenic psychosis has on you.
If you have time, read up on it. Please. The voices, the delusions,the hallucinations, the darkness. This illness is from hell and I say that in all seriousness. Imagine living in hell.. my brother did not want to act out in violent ways but he knew when he was in psychosis he had no control, so he told the prison and they released him without taking his pleas for help seriously. If they did listen to him, everything today would be different.
I am not asking you to pitty my family or my brother. I’m not asking for money. I’m asking for you to want to make a huge difference in many peoples lives going forward, forever, by doing such a small thing by reading the proof, and commenting your thoughts and/or signing up as an advocate.
We are trying to change the way prisons handle the incarcerated mentally ill so they get the proper help and we need help in making the department of corrections take responsibility for their wrongs so they don’t put any other family members through this.
It is not just for my brother. It is not just for Elijah. This is for everyone else also begging for help and getting thrown in a prison cell without their needs taken care of before being released..this is to ensure this incident never happens again. It’s to make sure those with a mental illness are separated in jails/prison and treated the way they need to be for proper rehabilitation.
