Paul – I met you and your son Michael when you came to my home to fix my computer. I live in Laveen.
I am a retired psychiatric social worked for over 30 years in the field of mental health. When I worked in Michigan at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry, a was a state-certified Forensic Examiner who evaluated defendants for their competency to stand trial. In this capacity, I sent reports and gave testimony in Michigan courts.
While I certainly didn’t clinically evaluate your son, I could see that he might be mentally ill. I did not sense that he might be dangerous. He seemed peaceful and presented as having a kind of 1960s “hippy vibe”. I remember that he wanted to be a naturopathic physician and that he liked music.
I was shocked to learn of the Circle K stabbing incident a few years ago when Michael was released from custody from prison. I didn’t learn that the Dept of Corrections did not provide him with transportation home, did not give him medication, and did not provide adequate treatment while he was in custody.
I didn’t know until today that he died in prison under conditions I could not discern when I read correspondence to him today on his birthday. For a brief period, Michael and I corresponded on facebook after you had come to our house.
How very tragic for all concerned – and as the father of a 21-year-old man who has a son with Autism, I can understand your frustration – and maybe even, your despair. Health services, especially mental health services in this country are abominable. The situation is worse than it was when I entered the field over 40 yrs ago.
I hope you are in contact with Michael’s daughter. I also hope you have been able to reach out to the family of the boy Michael killed. I hope you are as well as possible under your impossible circumstances.
